3 Quick Tips for HVAC Troubleshooting

 In All, Business, HVAC

Peak air conditioning season is upon us. No matter how expensive your HVAC system is or what your installer promises, a system of this magnitude has the potential to break down. There are several common issues that can arise with any HVAC system. Maybe your system isn’t cooling well. Possibly there is no airflow. Or is it not turning on at all? Here are some quick tips for HVAC troubleshooting that you can do before calling a professional.

  1. Verify you have power to your unit: It’s possible circuit was tripped or if you have fused, one has blown. Turn the circuit breaker off for about 10 seconds then turn back on. For a system with fuses, turn the main power off. Replace any blow or broken fuses. Check your thermostat to see if it has power. Make sure you check and replace batteries in your thermostat. If the thermostat isn’t working, your HVAC won’t work. Sometimes it’s as simple as replacing the battery.
  1. Check the thermostat setting: Be sure the thermostat is set properly. Are you set to “cool”? Is the temperature set correctly? If the answers are yes and you still aren’t cooling, try setting the thermostat 3-5 degrees below the room temperature. Wait 30 seconds and check an open register to see if cool air is coming out.
  1. Check for dirty coils or filters: Check for water near or below the unit. Check the coils to see if they need to be cleaned. Dirty condenser coils can cause your system to lose efficiency and increase utility bills. Evaporator coils can freeze necessitating an expensive repair. Having them cleaned regularly will lengthen the life of your HVAC system. Check your air filter. Some systems have permanent filters that require cleaning, others are disposable and need to be replaced regularly. If air filters are not changed or cleaned regularly, they become dirty and cause significant other issues including underperformance of your system and freezing of the condenser.
